The Government announced at Budget the introduction of a Border Clearance Levy to recover the cost of border clearance activities for travellers (passengers and crew).
Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) are seeking comment on the design, implementation and level of the new border clearance levy, how it’s collected, if the rates should be different for different transport type, and possible exemptions to the levy.
The levy will come into effect from 1 January 2016 and overall will be around $22 (GST incl.); with further refinements to more closely reflect cost differences between transport types, and arrivals and departures.
The consultation document and supporting information can be found on the MPI website. Consultation will run from 16 June until 5:00 pm 28 July 2015.
As part of consultation, meetings will be held around New Zealand. You can register your interest in attending a public meeting to be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in mid-July.
